Coconut - Young / Jelly Nut

Country of Origin - Southeast Asia
Average Weight - 1.4 KG

Introduction

If you’re looking to stay hydrated, the Jelly Nut / Young Coconut fruit will be your best friend. Jelly Nuts / Young Coconuts are known for the deliciously sweet coconut water they produce. They are also known as green coconuts. These coconuts have a vibrant green outside and a light grey translucent flesh that resembles the look of jelly – hence the name. The coconut flesh layer is very thin as the fruit is mostly filled with coconut water.

History

Coconuts originated somewhere in Indo-Malaya. They were spread as far as the Pacific Islands, Madagascar, and the Comoros during the Neolithic period.

Regions

Coconuts in general are mostly found in Indonesia. The Jelly Nut coconut is commonly found in Brazil, but is known to grow in tropical regions all over the world.

Flavours & Texture

The flavours and textures of the Jelly Nut / Young Coconut vary depending on how ripe the fruit is. When young, the Jelly Nut / Young Coconut has a light translucent flesh that is soft, sweet, and silky in flavour. When older, the Jelly Nut Coconut develops a more chewy and solid texture and the flesh becomes more white. The flavour then becomes more milky and sweet.

Preparation

You’ll need a strong tool - such as a machete - to open the Jelly Nut / Young Coconut. Crack off the top of the shell and drink the water using a straw. Then, eat the jelly flesh with a spoon. Delicious and thirst-quenching!

Nutritional Value

Jelly Nut / Young Coconuts are great for preventing dehydration. They are also packed with nutrients and compounds that may offer antioxidant benefits.
